Publishing an Ordering Subdomain (DNS Setup Guide)

Written by Sarah Hassler

Overview

To provide a branded ordering experience, AppFront can publish your online ordering page to a custom subdomain such as:

  • order.yourrestaurant.com

  • app.yourrestaurant.com

  • ordering.yourrestaurant.com

This is accomplished by adding a DNS record (typically a CNAME record) through your domain hosting provider.

Common providers include GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Squarespace, Wix, Bluehost, Shopify, and others.

What We Need From You

Your AppFront team will provide:

  • Host / Name / Target

  • Destination / Value

The exact terminology varies depending on your DNS provider.

Example

DNS Provider Field

Value

Type

CNAME

Host / Name / Target

order

Value / Points To / Destination

provided by AppFront

This would create:

order.yourrestaurant.com

How to Add the DNS Record

Step 1: Log in to Your Domain Provider

Access the platform where your DNS records are managed.

Examples:

  • GoDaddy

  • Cloudflare

  • Bluehost

  • Squarespace

  • Wix

  • Shopify

Step 2: Locate DNS Management

Look for one of the following sections:

  • DNS

  • DNS Management

  • Advanced DNS

  • Zone Editor

  • Domain Settings

Step 3: Create a New DNS Record

Select Add Record and choose:

Type: CNAME

Then enter the values supplied by AppFront.

Step 4: Save Your Changes

Save the record and notify your AppFront contact once complete.

Step 5: Wait for DNS Propagation

DNS updates begin propagating immediately but can take time to become visible across the internet.

Most records become active within:

  • 15 minutes to 2 hours

  • Occasionally up to 24 hours depending on the provider

Once the DNS record is visible, AppFront will complete the activation process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will order.myrestaurant.com simply point to our existing AppFront ordering experience, or will any URLs or functionality change?

Yes.

The new subdomain simply provides a branded URL for your existing AppFront ordering experience. Customers will continue using the same ordering platform and functionality.

The primary change is that customers access ordering through a URL that matches your brand, such as:

  • order.myrestaurant.com

instead of a generic AppFront-hosted URL.

No customer-facing ordering functionality changes.

Will this update impact our current online ordering setup, payment processing, customer accounts, loyalty program, or order history?

No.

Publishing a custom subdomain does not affect:

  • Online ordering functionality

  • Payment processing

  • Customer accounts

  • Loyalty and rewards

  • Stored customer information

  • Order history

  • POS integrations

This change only affects how customers reach the ordering site.

Will there be any downtime or service interruption while the DNS changes propagate?

In most cases, no.

Your current ordering link will continue functioning during the DNS propagation process.

Customers can continue placing orders normally while the new subdomain becomes active.

Once the records are added, approximately how long will activation take?

Typically:

  • DNS propagation: 15 minutes to 2 hours

  • Occasionally: up to 24 hours

After propagation is complete, AppFront can generally activate and verify the subdomain quickly.

Your AppFront representative will confirm once everything is live.

We have multiple locations. Will the subdomain support all locations and allow customers to select the correct store?

Yes.

If your AppFront ordering experience currently supports multiple locations, the branded subdomain will continue to do so.

Customers will be directed to the same ordering experience they use today and will be able to:

  • View available locations

  • Select the appropriate store

  • Place orders as normal

The exact landing page depends on your current ordering configuration.

For example:

  • Some businesses land on a location selection page.

  • Others may land on a primary location with the option to switch stores.

Your AppFront representative can provide a preview of your specific setup before activation.

What page will customers see when they visit the new subdomain?

Customers will see the same ordering experience currently configured in AppFront.

Depending on your setup, this may be:

  • A location selection page

  • A branded online ordering homepage

  • A specific store's ordering page

If you'd like to review the destination before publishing, contact your AppFront representative and we can provide a preview.

Can AppFront provide screenshots before activation?

Yes.

If requested, AppFront can provide screenshots or a preview link showing the ordering experience customers will see after activation.

If any issues arise after activation, is there a rollback process available?

Yes.

Because the change is controlled through DNS, reverting is straightforward.

If necessary, the DNS record can be:

  • Removed

  • Disabled

  • Pointed back to a previous destination

Your existing AppFront ordering experience remains intact, allowing us to quickly troubleshoot or revert the configuration if needed.
